Introduction to Precision Metal Fabrication

Precision metal fabrication is an industry field which provides all kinds of items made of metal that can be found all around us, yet few people are aware of the fundamentals behind what this process actually means. The present text is meant to clarify some particularities of precision metal fabrication, to enumerate and explain the different methods used to fabricate metal items and to give examples of items manufactured by specialists working in the precision metal fabrication field.

What is Precision Metal Fabrication?

Precision metal fabrication is a term which refers to the manufacturing of various metal components, and in order to create those components workers use several specialised techniques such as precision grinding, straightening, laser cutting, spot welding, sheet metal fabrication and others. Aside from these methods of production, there are three others which are perceived as the most often used in precision metal fabrication. Such methods refer to precision metal stamping, fabrications using CNC or computer numerical control and also, the assembling of finished products.

Methods of Production

An extremely common manufacturing technique employed by factories or workers that deal with precision metal fabrication is called precision metal stamping. Now this method can be generally defined as a process in which three-dimensional parts and other particular surfaces are engraved onto pieces of metal. This process is based on using really high pressure to stamp different shapes and dies onto metal surfaces. The latter consists of various types of metal including metal alloys, and common metals such as steel, aluminium, copper or titanium. Once the stamp completes its function, the lettering or whatever is being forced onto the metal piece remains engraved there.

The gear used in precision metal stamping ranges from basic equipment such as a manual press to more complicated and newly developed things such as a computerised die processor. These pieces of equipment are not only different in type, but also in size, some of them reaching very large sizes of hundreds of tons.

The second method used in precision metal fabrication is one that is based on a computer to process the instructions and conduct powered mechanical devices. This method known as computer numeric control employs specialised machines that are a lot more efficient than older methods because their function can complete tasks that workers or other machines wouldn't perform so effectively. Through the use of computer numeric control as a precision metal fabricating method, people can obtain various products, including 3-D structures.

The final primary method used in precision metal fabrication refers to the assembling stage, and it involves a component that is meant to finalise the manufacturing process. The various methods of manufacturing such as the two described above create different metal components which are afterwards subject to an assembling process. This process can be done in several places, yet on-site assembly is both more cost and time efficient.

Many kinds of items can be manufactured as part of a precision metal fabrication process. These products include simple metal parts such as metal rings to larger items such as household appliances and small boutiques.
