What is Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication?

The process of producing a metal component by altering a piece of metal material can be referred as precision sheet metal fabrication. The materials used in the manufacturing process are subject to various temperatures and according to those degrees the process can be divided into hot, warm or cold.

Precision sheet metal fabrication does not refer to a single process as there are multiple different processes through which finished metal items can be obtained. These items also vary in range. Amongst the many objects that are fabricated through a precision sheet metal fabrication process, basic items such as nails, paper clips, bolts and computers are included. Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication Particularities and Methods

The manufacturing process is performed according to various factors and requirements such as rate of production and many others that can influence this industrial activity. Precision sheet metal fabrication includes three main stages known as forming, cutting and finishing.

  • The first process is one through which workers bring modifications to a flat metal surface or sheet. Forming may include various other processes, the long list including drawing, bending, press forming, forging, welding, cold rolling and others.
  • After the metal piece is altered to a specific form, the cutting process takes place to eliminate the unwanted material from the metal sheet. As in the previous process, cutting can be achieved through many different means such as punching, sawing, stamping, shearing, blanking and drilling.
  • The last stage of a precision sheet metal fabrication process is finishing, and this stage includes techniques that are used to give a smooth, finished surface to the previously formed and cut metal sheet. Two common polishing techniques include sanding and one based on vibration.

The polishing stage is not the only one part of the finishing process. The latter may also include applications whose aesthetic purposes are also included in the finishing touch. Two examples include painting and visual designing applications.

Other Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication Processes

As previously mentioned, there are many kinds of processes whose name is connected to precision sheet metal fabrication. These include:

  • annealing or heating
  • cold rolling- a process in which sheets of metal are shaped using rollers
  • rolling - whose purpose is to decrease the thickness of the metal piece
  • forging which can be done by either hammering or pressing
  • extrusion- a process meant to create hollow tubes or cylindrical shaped items by forcing circular billets through one or multiple dies
  • drawing- intended to force metal into a die by using a punch to create a cup resembling shape
  • spinning -a process used to obtain axially symmetrical forms
