Introduction to Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal fabrication is no new process, but it was developed a long time ago with the difference that metal pieces were manufactured using hand tools. Nowadays, new developments were created to facilitate the work of industry specialists, and each updated fabricating technique is now used to generate completely different items. Sheet metal fabrication is the process of manipulating metal to form various components that can be used to create finished products. Processes Involved in Sheet Metal Fabrication

The cutting process consists of multiple cutting techniques which divide a piece of metal into separate bits. A common cutting technique is known as shearing which is the process of dividing a larger metal bit into smaller pieces by using shear stress, a process that involves a cutting machine. Other cutting methods include EDM or Electrical Discharge Machining, abrasive cutting, laser cutting and high pressure water cutting.

The forming process centres various forms of metal which are subsequently used to create larger component pieces that will either generate the finished item itself or will be used along with other parts to create the end product. There are multiple forming techniques which can be used to transform a cut metal piece into the desired shape. Whilst some metal bits can be hand-manipulated by workers, others involve the use of machines such as in the rolling technique which uses roll stands to give flat pieces of metal the required shape.

The final process is called finishing, and it is necessary for eliminating rough areas and edges and to give it a smooth, polished look by the use of an abrasive agent. After this process is complete, the sheet metal piece is either shipped as a final product or is used to create a larger component.

Some companies either open their own factories or purchase sheet metal pieces to acquire metal components which they can either sell or use as a final product. Truth is, there are plenty of companies that are specialised in the sheet metal fabrication field and resorting to the services of such a company is a lot more costly than hiring a sheet metal fabrication specialist. Such a person can complete the required tasks for the company, giving it the chance to focus on primary objectives such as marketing or promoting their products.
